Becoming a referee

Entry Level Information

  • You must be 12 years old to referee
  • Referees younger than 16 must take the Grade 9 course
  • Grade 9 course certifies referees to work In-House and Travel Divisions 2,3,4, B and C
  • Grade 8 course certifies referees to work all levels of competition within PA West Soccer

  • The cost $40 and requires 12 hours class time

    General Information about refereeing

  • Referees must re-cert each year
  • Re-cert happens during Oct, Nov and Dec. All re-cert courses must be completed by Dec. 31st

    In- House:

  • U8 Four (10min quarters) 2 -3 min. between quarters, 5 min. half time
  • U10 Two (24min quarters) 5 min. half time
  • Travel:

  • U10 Two 25 min. halves
  • U11 Two 30 min. halves
  • U12 Two 30 min. halves
  • U13 Two 35 min. halves
  • U14 Two 35 min. halves
  • U15 Two 35 min. halves

  • General Information for referees

  • Carl Heibling assigns the referees. Call off by Thursday or Friday or if sick by 9am Saturday
  • Show up 30 minutes prior to game
  • Get to your assigned field 15 minutes before start of game
  • Ref on assigned field, unless board member on site tells you to switch
  • Track your work, we pay at the end of the season
        NOTE: If you switch games with another ref or fill-in, please notify the assignor. Your pay may change for that game.
  • Required referee uniforms approved shirt, black short and black referee socks
        Sweatpants, jackets and hats are okay for bad weather. Please dress for the weather and bring extra clothes just in case.
  • U8 in-house don’t need flags
  • U10 and higher, please bring flags,coin,whistle and stopwatch.
  • Procedure at Games

  • Check in teams 10 minutes before the game
  • Check for shin pads, shirts tuck in and make sure they aren’t wearing any jewelry
  • Stay on schedule. If your game starts late, this will affect all other games on that field.
  • In-house get a second chance for throw ins. Okay to tell them what they are going wrong.
  • U8 have no goalies, handball in goal area by defense is considered a goal
  • All kick are indirect, except PK in U10
  • Make the players chase the balls for throw ins, goal kicks and corner kicks.
  • Be firm and make calls loud enough for coaches to hear.
  • Must have 3 for all U10 and higher.
